Role of Bridesmaids and Groomsmen

The participation of bridesmaids and groomsmen in the wedding serves different purposes namely: to ward off evil spirit, to protect the bride and the groom, to celebrate with the couple, to assist the bride and the groom, and to act as witnesses.

Wedding ceremony varies according to preference. Some wants it to be simple with few attendees while, others like it to be huge with long list of bridesmaids and groomsmen. Although this is optional, their presence is greatly appreciated because of the following essential roles they play:

Ward off evil spirit

During the early years, their presence during the wedding is much needed to ward off evil spirits, who might be present during the ceremony to spoil the event. It is their belief that by wearing the same attire as the bride and the groom, the evil spirit will be confused as to who the real bride and groom are.

Protect the bride and the groom

The history behind the participation of the bridesmaids and groomsmen started centuries ago during the Roman times. The best man protects the groom from the family of the bride who might come to steal the bride. The bridesmaid on the other hand, accompanies the bride as she travels to the place where his groom lives for the wedding ceremony.

Celebrate with the couple

One of the roles of the bridesmaids and groomsmen is to celebrate and share with the joys of the couple. Together they make a toast and cheer for a happy life ahead.

Assist the bride and the groom

To make the celebration smooth sailing, bridesmaids and groomsmen help in the preparation starting from the engagement party up to the very special day. They see to it that everything has been set prior to the commencement of the wedding ceremony. To be sure that all the visitors are assisted and well-served during the reception, the bridesmaids and the groomsmen must be there to oversee the flow. They are needed to accompany each guest to their seat.

Act as witnesses

During the ceremony, they serve as witnesses to the vows made by both the bride and the groom. Their presence during the exchange of "I dos" helps strengthen the love and trust of the couple because of their shared intentions to protect the couple.
