In a military wedding, your military groomsmen can wear their proper uniforms. Civilian groomsmen, on the other hand, can wear traditional wedding attire of the same level of formality.
Wondering what your groomsmen attire should be if your groom decides to wear his military uniform? Here are a few considerations to help you create that decent yet enjoyable wedding:
Acknowledge your military groomsmen
Some of your groomsmen could also be military members as you choose some close friends of the groom in their office. Aside from giving them recognition, it would be more appropriate to have them wear their uniform. Military divisions have their own dress codes for different occasions depending on formality. In a very formal or "black tie" wedding, for example, your groomsman from the Air force will be wearing his Mess Dress. If he is from the Marine Corps, he needs to wear Evening Dress "A" attire. For semi-formal weddings, their attire would be Service Dress and Evening Dress "B", respectively.
It is also said to be inappropriate to put boutonnieres on their uniforms. Military decorations and awards, instead, are pinned on their uniforms with gloves worn on their hands.
Conform civilian groomsmen attire to the formality of the wedding
If you also have nonmilitary groomsmen, their attire should match the formality of the wedding ceremony and the formality of the uniforms of your military groomsmen. In a strictly formal wedding, they can wear a black tailcoat jacket with black vest underneath, paired with black trousers, and a black bow tie. In a semi-formal wedding, your groomsmen can wear tuxedos. This way, the formality of both military and nonmilitary will not clash, but rather complement each other.
Choosing the right attire for your groomsmen may not be as difficult as doing others tasks, such as picking groomsmen gifts or even deciding who your groomsmen should be. It is, however, one of the most important things to decide as it sets the mood as well as the setting of your wedding. A well-coordinated and decent wedding will always be something your family and friends remember as time goes by.
